AFCON 2025 Sparks Public Optimism in Morocco, Survey Shows

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 continues to capture attention across the continent, discussions in Morocco are increasingly focusing on the tournament’s wider impact beyond the football pitch.
A nationwide survey conducted by market research firm Sunergia indicates that the majority of Moroccans view the event as an opportunity rather than a burden. According to the findings, over 70 percent of respondents believe AFCON 2025 will positively affect the country and enhance citizens’ daily lives, reflecting a broadly optimistic public sentiment.
The confidence appears most pronounced among younger Moroccans, particularly those aged 18 to 24. Critical perspectives remain limited, with only a small proportion of participants expressing concerns about potential negative consequences. These apprehensions are more commonly voiced by urban residents and individuals from higher socio-professional backgrounds. A notable segment of respondents, however, remains undecided or hesitant to take a clear stance.
Tourism emerges as the sector most frequently associated with expected benefits, with many participants anticipating a surge in visitor numbers and economic activity. Respondents also point to broader advantages, including increased international visibility for Morocco and improvements in transport networks and public infrastructure.
At the same time, the survey highlights recurring concerns among skeptics. Some fear that higher tourist flows could overwhelm public services, while others anticipate upward pressure on prices or added strain on transport and infrastructure.
Overall, the findings underscore a cautiously positive public mood. AFCON 2025 is widely seen as a catalyst for economic growth and international recognition, even as questions remain about how the country will manage the tournament’s logistical and financial impacts.
