Almaty Bids Farewell to Renowned Academician Toregeldy Sharmanov
Almaty, The Gulf Observer: The farewell ceremony for Toregeldy Sharmanov, president of the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition (KAN) and a legend in global healthcare, commenced in Almaty, according to media reports.
The funeral ceremony took place in the student theater of the Kazakh State Medical University named after S. D. Asfendiyarov. Approximately one thousand attendees, including state and public figures, government members, the city akim, deputies, healthcare representatives, the akimat, friends, relatives, and colleagues, gathered to pay their respects. Many individuals had assembled at the theater half an hour before the ceremony began, and several police officers were present to maintain order and ensure safety.
During his address, Chairman of the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Koshanov, read a letter of condolence from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. President Tokayev noted that Toregeldy Sharmanovich was a unique individual who dedicated his life to national health and was a man of high intelligence. He highlighted Sharmanov’s contributions to advancing domestic medicine and his role in initiating numerous beneficial initiatives. Under Sharmanov’s leadership, Kazakhstan expanded the boundaries of nutritional science and established cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international organizations. He also founded his own educational institution and nurtured a remarkable generation. The President emphasized that Sharmanov’s legacy of respect and guidance would be forever remembered by the people of Kazakhstan.
Additionally, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov sent a letter of condolences to Sharmanov’s family and relatives, which was read by Deputy Prime Minister Tamara Duissenova. Akim of Almaty Yerbolat Dossayev also delivered a speech at the farewell ceremony.
The renowned nutritionist will be laid to rest at Kensai Cemetery in Almaty. WHO Europe Regional Director Dr. Hans Kluge also extended his heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dr. Toregeldy Sharmanov in a post on social media.
