Anwar Ibrahim Calls for Legal Safeguards to Protect Local Creative Works from AI Threats

Shah Alam, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed Malaysia’s Communications Ministry and Digital Ministry to swiftly formulate legislation aimed at protecting local creative works from the growing influence and potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
Speaking at the launch of renowned political cartoonist Zunar’s autobiography “Melukis Dengan Hati: Biografi Perjalanan Seni 50 Tahun Karya Zunar”, Anwar emphasized that without appropriate regulation, AI could pose a serious threat to the authenticity and originality of artistic creations.
“If the proliferation of AI technology is not properly regulated, it would negatively impact a multitude of artistic fields and endeavours. It will not only affect cartoonists but also artists, painters, filmmakers, and poets,” he stated.
Anwar underscored the importance of ensuring that AI development in Malaysia remains grounded in national values and cultural identity. “Our policies must not simply duplicate foreign models. We must protect our values and identity from being eroded. If we want AI to reflect our faith, culture, and diversity, we must start by training our children accordingly,” he added.
The Prime Minister stressed that copyright protection and the prevention of plagiarism must be central components of any legislation introduced to protect local creatives.
On a separate note, Anwar reaffirmed the importance of judicial independence, warning against political interference in legal processes. While acknowledging that some current voices advocating for judicial integrity had previously engaged in political oppression, Anwar highlighted the need for a consistent and principled approach. “There must be a clear separation of powers and a shared responsibility to safeguard the country,” he said.
He also noted that the judiciary, though a noble institution, had at times been compromised by corruption and abuse of power—episodes that Zunar had boldly documented in his work, including depictions of the 1MDB scandal.
The event was attended by several key dignitaries, including Anwar’s wife and Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
