Anwar Ibrahim Urges Religious Leaders to Unite in Defending Faith and Humanity

Petaling Jaya, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on religious leaders across the globe to unite in defending faith and humanity against those who reject spiritual and moral values.

Speaking at the Second International Summit of Religious Leaders 2025 in Petaling Jaya on Thursday, Anwar emphasized the crucial role of faith leaders in advancing peace, justice, and mutual understanding. The three-day summit, themed “The Role of Religious Leaders in Resolving Conflicts”, gathered 1,500 participants, including religious authorities and scholars from over 54 countries.

The Prime Minister recalled the historical role of religious leaders in anti-colonial movements, noting that while religion had once been exploited under imperialism to oppress people, it also inspired movements for freedom, justice, and human dignity.

“I appeal to religious leaders to take up this task, as my own experience in governance has shown that there is blatant hypocrisy when we speak of democracy, human rights, and justice,” Anwar said. “Religious leaders must understand the meaning of peace. While there are differences among us, compassion in religion — including in Islam — is meant for everyone.”

Highlighting Malaysia’s multi-religious fabric, Anwar acknowledged the challenges of governing a nation comprising a Muslim majority alongside sizeable Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and animist communities. He stressed that the government must engage with all groups to foster harmony.

“All religions must unite to create an understanding and defend humanity against those who reject faith and values,” he added.

The summit serves as an inclusive platform for global interfaith dialogue, aiming to strengthen collaboration among religious leaders in addressing conflicts and promoting peace worldwide.
