Azerbaijan Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty at OIC Extraordinary Session

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev participated in the extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Somalia, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The meeting focused on reaffirming support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the recognition of the “Somaliland” region as an independent state, and on discussing possible joint steps by OIC member states.

Addressing the session, Rafiyev reiterated Azerbaijan’s firm support for the sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. As an active member of the OIC Contact Group on Somalia, he emphasized that Azerbaijan would continue to support collective international efforts, including those of OIC member states, aimed at safeguarding Somalia’s unity.

The deputy foreign minister underscored Azerbaijan’s commitment to the norms and principles of international law, calling on the international community to act responsibly and within the established legal framework to promote peace, stability, and security, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin.

At the conclusion of the 22nd extraordinary session, the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers adopted a resolution expressing unequivocal and resolute support for Somalia and its territorial integrity.
