Mount Kapaz of Azerbaijan
Mount Kapaz is a mountain at an elevation of 3,065m (10,056ft) above the sea level, located in the region of Ganja-Gazakh, near the historic city of Ganja in the western part of Azerbaijan.
Located next to Lake Goygol
It is located next to Lake Goygol and its huge rocks broke off the mount and blocked a nearby river during the 1139 Ganja earthquake; creating the lake.
In the Middle Ages, the mount was also called “Alparak”, a name borrowed from Alparak lake (now Goygol) translated from ancient Turkic languages as “the place covered by dam” (Al – below, lower part, space in front of something; parak – dam) referring to the big rocks which blocked the Agsu river and creating a lake.
Four wheel drive is recommended
The glacial meltwater on the mount feed the waters of Goygol. The site is reached only by four-wheel drive in good weather (the best time to visit is between mid-July to the end of August). It is not recommended to travel the road to mount Kapaz in severe weather conditions.
Experienced driver is required for destination
Most people feel altitude sickness at around 2,500-2,800 meters. An experienced driver and guide is necessary to reach the site.
The road is dangerous in extreme weather
Such as due to: blizzard, strong winds, fog, low visibility, black ice on some road sections and danger of sliding is common.
