Azerbaijani and Iraqi Presidents Discuss Climate and Bilateral Cooperation at COP29 in Baku
Baku, The Gulf Observer: On Monday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev welcomed Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid in Baku to discuss key issues on climate change and strengthening bilateral relations between their nations. This high-level meeting took place against the backdrop of the ongoing COP29 climate summit, hosted by Azerbaijan.
During the meeting, President Rashid emphasized Iraq’s commitment to addressing climate change, underscoring the importance of fulfilling international climate agreements. He also highlighted the devastating impact of wars and conflicts on the environment, reaffirming Iraq’s dedication to environmental preservation. Represented by a substantial delegation, Iraq’s participation at COP29 demonstrates its engagement in tackling global climate challenges.
President Aliyev shared Azerbaijan’s commitment to advancing climate solidarity and fostering collaborative efforts among states. He stressed that Azerbaijan prioritizes practical, outcome-focused negotiations on climate initiatives, aiming to set new financial targets to address the crisis. Notably, President Aliyev disclosed that close to 70,000 people had registered to participate in COP29, which Azerbaijan organized within a remarkably short timeframe. This “city within a city” was constructed with a focus on sustainability, with materials meeting high environmental standards.
The Azerbaijani President also addressed what he described as unjust criticisms leveled against Azerbaijan by certain Western media outlets, allegedly under the guise of COP29-related concerns.
On the subject of bilateral ties, President Aliyev underscored the successful functioning of the Azerbaijan-Iraq intergovernmental commission, which facilitates cooperation across various sectors. Both leaders expressed optimism for continued collaboration on environmental initiatives and other shared goals, signaling a deepening of Azerbaijani-Iraqi relations.
