Azerbaijani FM, US Assistant Secretary of State discuss current situation in the region
Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov has held a telephone conversation with US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried.
During the phone conversation, the sides discussed topical issues on the agenda of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, the current situation in the region, as well as Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed Donfried about the current situation in the region, including the latest provocations by Armenia, which continues to transfer personnel and ammunition to the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan, and steps undertaken by Azerbaijan without using force against these provocations.
During the conversation, the FM once again stressed the importance of establishing a border control checkpoint at the beginning of the Lachin road in order to prevent illegal activities on the territory of Azerbaijan. The minister also touched upon the unconstructive approaches of Armenia, which impedes the negotiations on a peace agreement, and emphasized that Azerbaijan is ready to start negotiations on a peace agreement at any time.
Karen Donfried, in turn, underlined the importance of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia for regional peace and development. The US Assistant Secretary of State expressed concern over the recent tense situation in the region, calling on the sides to resolve all misunderstandings through negotiations. She noted that the American side is ready to support this process.
FM Bayramov wished Karen Donfrid, who will soon leave her current post, success in her future endeavors.
