Azerbaijani President Signs Order on Shusha’s Designation as ECO Tourism Capital 2026

Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has signed an official Order concerning the implementation of measures related to the designation of the city of Shusha as the “Tourism Capital of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) for 2026.”

The designation was formally conferred during the 5th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Tourism, held on October 5, 2023, in Ardabil, Islamic Republic of Iran. Widely regarded as the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, Shusha’s selection as the ECO Tourism Capital recognizes its deep historical, cultural, and socio-political significance within the region.

This new status is anticipated to strengthen tourism cooperation among ECO member countries and further elevate Shusha’s international profile as a hub of heritage, art, and intercultural dialogue.

Pursuant to the presidential Order, the Cabinet of Ministers has been instructed to prepare and implement a comprehensive action plan for the official declaration and promotion of Shusha’s ECO Tourism Capital status. The Cabinet will also be responsible for addressing other administrative and logistical matters stemming from the Order.

Shusha’s designation aligns with Azerbaijan’s broader strategic objectives to promote cultural diplomacy, regional tourism development, and enhanced cooperation within the ECO framework.
