Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry: Armenia’s Historical Falsification Propaganda Undermines Peace Efforts
Baku, The Gulf Observer: Aykhan Hajizada, Spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, criticized Armenia’s Foreign Ministry for issuing what he called a “fabricated” statement on January 15, 2025, regarding the alleged “massacre of Armenians” in Baku in January 1990. He accused the Armenian Foreign Ministry of continuing the “systematic policy of intolerance and ethnic hatred” toward Azerbaijan.
Hajizada reminded Armenia’s Foreign Ministry that such accusations of ethnic cleansing and massacres are rooted in Armenia’s own history. He referenced the mass deportations and killings of Azerbaijanis by Armenia, particularly noting the deportation of over 450,000 Azerbaijanis from the former Armenian SSR in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as the waves of persecution from 1987 onwards.
He also pointed to the horrific events in Khojaly, where 613 Azerbaijani civilians were murdered in one night, emphasizing that Armenia’s fabricated claims were intended to deflect attention from their own actions. He called out Armenia’s narrative surrounding the “Sumgayit massacres” as a planned propaganda effort designed to justify their violent actions against Azerbaijanis.
Hajizada concluded that the calls for compensation from Armenians, who benefited from Baku’s oil wealth, for atrocities committed during the conflict were “absurd,” and warned that such historical distortions by Armenia would not contribute to peace but rather pose a dangerous threat to stability.
