Azerbaijan’s Karabakh Victory Marks New Era of Peace and Justice in the Caucasus: Erdogan

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that Azerbaijan’s victory in Karabakh will pave the way for lasting peace in the region, provided that Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders adopt constructive approaches, adding that Türkiye will continue to extend its full support.

Speaking at a ceremony in Baku marking the fifth anniversary of Azerbaijan’s Victory Day, President Erdogan emphasized that Ankara views Baku’s triumph not as an endpoint but as a milestone toward enduring peace and stability in the Caucasus.

“Azerbaijan’s Karabakh victory ended a major injustice and ushered in a new era in the region, reshaping geopolitical balances across Asia and Europe,” Erdogan said.

He praised the Azerbaijani Army’s heroism during the 44-day Patriotic War, stating that “every step taken by the Azerbaijani Army in Karabakh for independence is written in golden letters in the history of the Turkic world.”

Earlier, President Erdogan arrived in Azerbaijan to take part in the Victory Day celebrations held in the capital, Baku.

Most of the Karabakh region, which had been under Armenian occupation for nearly three decades, was liberated by Azerbaijani forces during the 44-day war in the autumn of 2020. The conflict concluded with a Russian-brokered peace agreement, opening the path toward normalization between Baku and Yerevan.

On November 8, 2020, the Azerbaijani army liberated the city of Shusha, a decisive victory that led to the end of the conflict and was later declared as Victory Day by presidential decree. Initially, Victory Day was to be marked on November 10—the day the Second Karabakh War concluded—but the date was changed as it coincided with the anniversary of the passing of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye.
