Baghdad Arab Summit Endorses Morocco’s Bid for UN Security Council Seat (2028–2029)

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: In a significant diplomatic endorsement, the 34th session of the Council of the League of Arab States, held Saturday in Baghdad, has officially backed Morocco’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–2029 term.
This support, formalized in the Baghdad Declaration, calls on all Arab League member states to actively mobilize diplomatic efforts and engage with international partners to secure Morocco’s election to the prestigious UN body.
A Strategic Step Toward Global Diplomacy
Representing Morocco at the summit was Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, leading a high-level delegation that included:
- Mohamed Ait Ouali, Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League
- Abdelkrim Bensellam, Chargé d’Affaires in Baghdad
- Abdelali El Jahid, Head of the Arab and Islamic Organizations Division
- Hicham Ould Sallay, Deputy Permanent Representative to the Arab League
- Mohamed Nouri, Counselor at the Permanent Representation
Morocco’s candidacy reflects its commitment to multilateralism, peacebuilding, and a rules-based international order. The kingdom has previously served on the Security Council, most recently in 2012–2013, where it was noted for its constructive diplomatic role on issues ranging from Middle Eastern stability to African peacekeeping.
Gaza Crisis Takes Center Stage
While Morocco’s candidacy was a key diplomatic milestone, the summit was heavily dominated by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Leaders issued urgent calls for an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid access, and the reconstruction of Gaza, condemning the widespread devastation and loss of civilian life.
Hosted by Iraq for the first time since 2012, the summit drew participation from all 22 Arab League members, alongside notable international figures, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Regional Unity and Global Aspiration
The endorsement of Morocco’s UNSC bid is being viewed as a symbol of Arab unity and support for Rabat’s expanding diplomatic role. With strong ties across Africa, the Arab world, and the West, Morocco is positioning itself as a bridge between regions—a quality highly relevant to the Security Council’s mandate.
If elected, Morocco would bring a unique perspective grounded in moderation, regional stability, and international cooperation, reinforcing the Arab League’s presence on the global stage at a time of unprecedented geopolitical volatility.
