Bahrain Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Bahrain has reiterated its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorsed the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as a realistic and credible solution to the longstanding dispute.

The reaffirmation was made in a joint statement issued during the official visit of Mohamed Ould Errachid, President of Morocco’s House of Councillors, to Bahrain from 12 to 16 January. The visit was conducted at the invitation of Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh, Speaker of Bahrain’s Shura Council.

According to the statement from Morocco’s House of Councillors, Bahrain welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on 31 October 2025, describing it as an important step toward achieving a lasting and realistic solution to the Western Sahara issue. The Bahraini side reiterated its consistent support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco.

In recent years, Morocco has achieved significant diplomatic progress regarding the Western Sahara issue, with an increasing number of countries expressing support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as the most serious and credible approach. The adoption of UNSC Resolution 2797 further confirmed the international community’s backing for a political solution grounded in realism, compromise, and Morocco’s initiative.

The joint statement emphasized that the visit reflects the strong brotherly relations between Morocco and Bahrain, guided by King Mohammed VI and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Discussions highlighted the depth of historical ties based on solidarity, mutual respect, and continuous coordination on matters of common interest. Both sides praised the high level of bilateral relations and underscored the important role of their legislative institutions in enhancing parliamentary cooperation and diplomacy to serve the national interests of both countries.

Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh noted that the longstanding ties and close cooperation between Morocco and Bahrain demonstrate shared values, strong partnership, and a common destiny. He also commended Morocco’s efforts to promote parliamentary dialogue and cooperation among Arab and African parliaments, as well as its hosting of constructive parliamentary meetings.

For his part, Mohamed Ould Errachid highlighted Bahrain’s active role in Asia and its contribution to strengthening regional parliamentary dialogue. He welcomed Bahrain’s upcoming presidency of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly starting January 2026, expressing confidence that this role will further enhance cooperation among Asian nations. Ould Errachid also reaffirmed Morocco’s readiness to work closely with Bahrain to strengthen parliamentary bridges between Africa and Asia, promote South-South dialogue, and advance peace, development, and shared prosperity.

Both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation between Bahrain’s Shura Council and Morocco’s House of Councillors through joint mechanisms, increased exchange visits, and closer coordination within regional and international parliamentary forums. The visit concluded with a shared commitment to deepen bilateral and parliamentary cooperation, in line with the aspirations of the Moroccan and Bahraini peoples for progress and prosperity.
