China and Cambodia Sign Cooperation Agreement to Elevate Bilateral Relations

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: In a significant move to strengthen bilateral ties, China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) and Cambodia’s National Assembly signed a cooperation agreement on Monday, aiming to elevate relations between the two nations to new heights. The agreement was formalized following talks between Zhao Leji, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, and Khuon Sudary, president of Cambodia’s National Assembly, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Chairman Zhao underscored that the construction of a China-Cambodia community with a shared future has entered a new era of high-quality, high-level, and high-standard cooperation, guided by the strategic leadership of both countries. He emphasized China’s commitment to working closely with Cambodia to implement key agreements reached by their leaders, particularly within the framework of the Diamond Hexagon cooperation initiative. This initiative is set to deepen the partnership and ensure solid progress in building the China-Cambodia shared future community.

Zhao reiterated that China regards Cambodia as a vital partner in its neighborhood diplomacy and is committed to maintaining high-level strategic communication. He assured that China stands ready to firmly support Cambodia on issues concerning both countries’ core interests. Additionally, he emphasized the need to accelerate the alignment of development strategies between the two nations, focusing on areas such as politics, production capacities, agriculture, energy, security, and cultural exchange.

Furthermore, Zhao called for the practice of genuine multilateralism, urging both nations to safeguard the hard-won peace and stability in the region. He noted the NPC’s readiness to enhance collaboration with Cambodia’s legislature by utilizing the counterpart exchange mechanism, fostering cooperation in various fields, and enhancing legislative and supervisory experience. These efforts, Zhao added, would provide legal assurance for deepening pragmatic cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides also discussed the importance of maintaining close coordination within multilateral parliamentary organizations to advocate for the interests of developing nations. Zhao highlighted the potential for both countries’ legislatures to collaborate on strengthening democracy and improving the rule of law through mutual learning and exchange.

President Khuon Sudary reaffirmed Cambodia’s strong adherence to the one-China principle and its active support for China’s Belt and Road Initiative, as well as the three major global initiatives put forward by China. She expressed Cambodia’s readiness to enhance friendly exchanges with China’s NPC and contribute positively to the further development of bilateral relations. She also highlighted Cambodia’s desire to consolidate the traditional friendship between the two nations while promoting practical cooperation in fields such as the economy, trade, and culture.

This landmark agreement marks another step forward in the long-standing and ever-growing partnership between China and Cambodia, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation in pursuit of shared prosperity and stability in the region.
