Munich, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s steadfast commitment to promoting peace talks on the Ukraine issue, emphasizing that China will not abandon this pursuit as long as there is a glimmer of hope. Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, addressed the issue during the “China in the World” session at the ongoing Munich Security Conference.

Responding to questions about China’s stance on the Budapest Memorandum and its position regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Wang clarified that while China is not a signatory to the Budapest Memorandum, it has formally acknowledged it through a government statement.

Highlighting China’s nuclear policy, Wang stated that among nuclear-weapon states, China maintains a clear and progressive stance featuring a no-first-use pledge of nuclear weapons and a commitment not to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear-weapon states, including Ukraine. He underscored that Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the imperative of avoiding the use of nuclear weapons and urged all parties to collaborate in ensuring the security of nuclear materials and facilities.

Wang reiterated that China, as a non-party to the Ukraine crisis, neither instigated nor exploited the situation. President Xi Jinping has consistently emphasized the principles of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, addressing the legitimate security concerns of countries seriously, and supporting all efforts conducive to a peaceful settlement of the crisis.

China, Wang emphasized, remains committed to promoting peace talks and has played a positive role in endeavors to restore peace. He emphasized the urgency of resuming peace talks at the earliest possible juncture, emphasizing that an early resumption would minimize damage for all involved parties.

This stance, as articulated by Wang, reflects China’s official position and fundamental principle on the Ukraine issue, underlining the country’s dedication to diplomatic solutions and its commitment to international peace and stability.
