China Supports Extension of UNAMA Mandate in Afghanistan

New York, The Gulf Observer: In a recent session of the United Nations Security Council, China cast its vote in favor of extending the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). However, China’s support was underscored by concerns regarding the adequacy of the resolution’s reflection of the current state of affairs in Afghanistan. Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, articulated China’s stance during the session.
While expressing support for the work of the United Nations and Special Representative Roza Otunbayeva, Geng Shuang highlighted China’s disappointment with the draft resolution’s failure to address the latest developments in Afghanistan. He emphasized the need for the international community to adapt its response to Afghanistan’s evolving situation, acknowledging both progress and persistent challenges.
Geng noted that two and a half years after the withdrawal of foreign troops, Afghanistan has seen stability in its domestic situation and improvements in its economy and regional cooperation. However, challenges persist in areas such as humanitarian assistance, economic development, and counterterrorism efforts.
In proposing adjustments to the UN secretary-general’s reporting cycle to the Security Council, Geng suggested that the reporting cycle be extended in light of the overall stabilization of the security situation in Afghanistan. He assured that such adjustments would not undermine the Security Council’s ability to address Afghanistan-related issues promptly nor weaken support for the Afghan people.
Furthermore, Geng stressed the importance of Security Council actions being aligned with the needs of the Afghan people and the evolving situation on the ground. He reiterated China’s commitment to ongoing communication with all relevant parties regarding Afghanistan-related matters.
China’s nuanced stance underscores the complexity of the Afghan situation and the necessity for a dynamic and responsive international approach to address the country’s multifaceted challenges while supporting its ongoing development and stability efforts.
