China urges immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine
New York, The Gulf Observer: China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, urged the involved parties in the Ukraine crisis to swiftly conclude hostilities. This plea followed an emergency meeting convened by the Security Council on Friday, focusing on civilian casualties arising from the conflict in Ukraine. At Russia’s request, the council reconvened on Saturday to further deliberate on the same issue.
Expressing sorrow over the intense discussions at the close of the year regarding severe attacks and civilian casualties, Geng emphasized China’s deep concern about the prolonged Ukraine crisis.
He underscored the detrimental impact of warfare, stating that conflicts yield no winners, inflicting profound suffering on innocent people and causing substantial damage to regional peace and stability. Geng emphasized the potential hindrance to global economic development, particularly for developing countries striving to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
