China Warns Against US and EU Trade Protectionism, Advocates for Solidarity and Cooperation

EU Trade Protectionism

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, cautioned that trade protectionist measures taken by the United States and Europe will not only hinder their long-term development but also impede global progress and prosperity. The remarks were made in response to reports that the U.S. is considering restricting imports of Chinese smart cars and related components, while the EU has initiated an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric car imports.

Mao Ning emphasized that the automotive industry operates on the principles of division of labor and mutually beneficial collaboration, and China’s leapfrog development in the sector has contributed cost-effective, high-quality products to the global market. Notably, one in every three exported automobiles from China is an electric car, significantly contributing to the world’s green and low-carbon transition.

Highlighting the negative impact of trade protectionism, Mao Ning echoed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s perspective, stating that turning normal trade activities into security and ideological issues, creating “small yards with high fences” under the guise of “de-risking,” and attempting to “trip others up” instead of “running faster” may appear as victories but ultimately result in self-inflicted setbacks for long-term development.

China, she reiterated, stands for solidarity, cooperation, and openness, rejecting division, confrontation, and isolation. The country advocates for accommodating the interests of all parties, pursuing common development alongside individual progress, and creating a world-class, market-oriented, and law-based environment for global economic and trade cooperation. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of making economic globalization more inclusive and beneficial to all.
