Rio De Janeiro, The Gulf Observer: His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, led the United Arab Emirates delegation to the 17th BRICS Summit, officially inaugurated in Rio de Janeiro by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

This year’s summit, chaired by Brazil, is being held under the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”. The gathering brings together heads of state and government from BRICS member countries, leaders of invited states, and representatives of regional and international organisations.

In his address at the summit, H.H. Sheikh Khaled conveyed greetings and well wishes from the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to all participating nations. He expressed the UAE’s hopes for the summit’s success in fostering balanced international partnerships rooted in cooperation, development, and mutual respect.

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi underlined BRICS’ vital role as a platform for enhancing mutual understanding and forging strategic convergence in addressing global challenges, including economic instability, humanitarian issues, and escalating geopolitical tensions.

H.H. Sheikh Khaled affirmed the UAE’s commitment to building robust partnerships based on sustainable development and shared prosperity, which he described as fundamental to advancing collective national interests and improving the well-being of peoples worldwide.

He further reaffirmed the UAE’s strong belief in constructive dialogue and economic integration as essential pillars for global stability. He reiterated the UAE’s support for expanding BRICS to deepen strategic collaboration among countries, regional blocs, and international entities.

The summit also featured a high-level dialogue session attended by BRICS leaders and heads of delegations. The session focused on major economic and development issues, including strengthening cooperation among Global South nations, reforming global governance systems, promoting the use of local currencies in trade, accelerating the green economic transition, advancing climate finance, and fostering responsible governance of artificial intelligence.

Additionally, the dialogue emphasized the importance of reinforcing partnerships in food security, healthcare, and technology—reaffirming BRICS’ collective commitment to inclusive and sustainable development in line with global aspirations.

The UAE is participating in the BRICS Summit for the second time as a full member, following the group’s expansion. Established in 2009, BRICS aims to promote political and economic cooperation among emerging economies and has become a key voice for the Global South in shaping global governance.
