Czechia Allocates CZK 29 Billion from EU Fund to Support Coal Region Transition

Prague, The Gulf Observer: Czechia will allocate nearly CZK 29 billion from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund to support the decarbonisation of its coal-dependent regions—Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem, and Moravia-Silesia—Environment Minister Petr Hladík announced during a press conference on Thursday.
The funding represents 70 percent of the total allocation for the country, with six billion crowns already disbursed. Minister Hladík highlighted that Czechia ranks among the leading EU member states in successfully securing and implementing these funds, which are designed to aid regions in shifting from coal-based economies to sustainable and diversified models.
The Just Transition programme will support a broad range of initiatives, including business development, scientific research, clean energy, education, and social projects. The bulk of the investment will focus on skill-building, land restoration, and innovation.
Of the 34 strategic projects submitted for consideration, 22 will receive funding, predominantly within the academic and public sectors. One of the flagship initiatives is the establishment of a Spa Research Centre in Karlovy Vary, aimed at enhancing the region’s research capacity and economic resilience.
The programme is seen as a critical component of Czechia’s broader strategy to achieve environmental goals while ensuring a just and inclusive transition for communities historically reliant on coal-based industries.
