Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Dhofar Governorate has firmly established itself as a premier winter tourism destination, attracting visitors from around the world with its rich historical heritage and diverse natural landscapes. The region experiences a notable influx of tourists, particularly from European countries, eager to explore its unique offerings.
Every year, organised tourist groups from Germany, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Switzerland visit Dhofar to immerse themselves in its archaeological and natural wonders. Popular historical attractions include the renowned sites of Al Baleed, Sumhuram, and Al Shisr, the Museum of the Land of Frankincense, and the historic forts of Taqah and Mirbat. Traditional markets, such as the Gold and Silver Souk, along with the pristine landscapes of Jabal Samhan Reserve, further enhance the region’s appeal.
For adventure enthusiasts, Dhofar offers a variety of outdoor activities, including free walking, mountain biking, and sandboarding, alongside marine experiences such as diving and kayaking. Winter desert tourism is a particularly sought-after experience for foreign visitors, extending from Wadi Dokah in Thumrait, home to a renowned frankincense tree reserve, to Al Shisr, famous for its striking sand dunes and picturesque sunsets. Tourists can also engage in Bedouin traditions, enjoying camel rides and fresh camel milk. Expansive sand dunes, such as Hashman Sands and Ramlat Jadhila in the Niyabat of Mitin, Wilayat of Al Mazyouna, offer an unparalleled desert experience.
Marwan bin Abdul Hakeem Al Ghassani, Director of the Promotion Department at the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, highlighted the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s ongoing efforts to position Dhofar as a leading international tourist destination. These efforts include targeted promotional campaigns through familiarisation trips, media delegations, participation in global tourism exhibitions, and strategic advertising initiatives. The success of these initiatives is evident, with the introduction of direct flights from Uzbekistan and Belarus to Salalah Airport. Last year, the number of charter flight tourists surpassed 70,000, with early data indicating further growth this season.
Saeed bin Ahmed Rir Omar, CEO and owner of Al Fawaz Tourism Office, emphasised the steady increase in foreign tourism in Oman, crediting collaborations with international tourism offices for this success. His company regularly receives visitors from European countries and has established partnerships with tourism operators in Dubai, Poland, Austria, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Uzbekistan, and beyond, facilitating direct flights to Salalah.
Alawi bin Mohammed Ba’alawi, an experienced tour guide, attributed the significant annual growth of European and international tourism to Oman’s security, stability, and rich archaeological sites. He also noted that tourism serves as a vital source of employment in the region.
Petra Nawrocka, a tour guide at Slovakian travel agency Sator Travel, shared her positive impressions of Dhofar’s tourism offerings, praising the region’s natural beauty, the warm hospitality of its people, and the high standard of accommodation. She particularly highlighted the appeal of the Rub’ al Khali desert, the stunning beaches, and Dhofar’s historical landmarks. She also noted that the safety and stability of Oman are key factors contributing to its growing appeal. Additionally, the cultural experience surrounding camel-related activities and the deep-rooted Omani connection with these animals left a lasting impression on visitors, fostering a strong desire for return visits.
Dhofar’s winter tourism season continues to thrive, reinforcing Oman’s position as a must-visit destination for global travelers.
