Egypt, UK share common goal of attaining stability in Sudan: UK envoy
Cairo, The Gulf Observer: UK Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan Robert Fairweather stressed that Egypt and UK share a common goal, which is attaining stability and security in Sudan.
Fairweather described his recent meetings in Egypt as ”fruitful,” highlighting the crucial role played by Egypt in hosting the Sudanese people, who fled their country due to the increased intensity of the conflict there.
During his visit to Egypt, Fairweather met with a host of Egyptian and regional officials, as well as representatives of humanitarian organizations to discuss the situation in Sudan, according to a statement issued by the British Embassy in Cairo.
Earlier this week, Fairweather discussed with Egypt’s Deputy Foreign Minister for African Affairs Hamdy Louza efforts to reach a lasting ceasefire agreement to stem bloodshed and preserve the safety of civilians.
The two sides discussed opening corridors to facilitate the supply of foodstuffs and medical supplies to Sudanese.
UK Ambassador in Cairo Gareth Bayley attended the meeting.
Egypt has been coordinating with international partners to achieve ceasefire in Sudan and ensure that other countries or parties do not interfere in the Sudanese domestic affairs against the background of the conflict.
Egypt welcomed on Friday the signing of the Jeddah declaration between Sudan’s army and rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to settle the crisis in Sudan after around a month of fighting.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that such a step is important to provide protection for Sudanese civilians, give access to humanitarian and relief aid, protect public institutions and ease evacuation.
Egypt, as a neighbor to Sudan, has been urging the conflicting Sudanese parties to return to dialogue to reach a permanent ceasefire after the clashes killed hundreds of Sudanese, injured thousands, and forced tens of thousands to flee the country to Egypt.
