Emine Erdoğan Showcases Traditional Turkish Dowries at New York Event

New York, The Gulf Observer: Turkish First Lady Emine Erdoğan introduced the rich cultural heritage of Turkish dowries to an international audience during her visit to New York for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The event, titled “Bridal Treasures: A Journey Through Ottoman and Anatolian Dowries,” was held at the Turkish House on Tuesday and highlighted the longstanding tradition of dowry preparation in Turkish culture.

In her address, First Lady Erdoğan explained the deep cultural significance of dowries, which have been passed down through generations. “Dowry items are not only meant to meet daily needs but also serve as special letters that express women’s emotions, wishes, and dreams through symbols,” she said. She emphasized that the tradition is more than just material preparation for a bride’s new home; it is a communal effort involving family and friends, symbolizing social unity and solidarity.

The event showcased how every stage of dowry preparation, from the crafting of items to the delivery of the bridal chest, reflects the rich cultural memory of the Anatolian region. “Throughout history, the people of the region have intricately woven every aspect of life into their creations, enhancing their living spaces with delicate touches,” Erdoğan remarked.

The First Lady clarified that the Turkish dowry tradition should not be confused with practices in parts of South Asia where families are pressured to collect money for weddings. In Turkey, the dowry is a symbol of communal support and a reflection of women’s emotional and artistic expressions.

The high-profile event was attended by several international dignitaries, including Oluremi Tinubu, First Lady of Nigeria; Prindon Sadriu, husband of Kosovo’s President; and First Ladies from Mauritius, Fiji, Guatemala, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Other notable attendees included Greece’s Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis, Albania’s Linda Rama, and Philile Dlamini, First Lady of Eswatini.
