Erdogan and Macron Discuss Safe Return of Syrian Refugees and Regional Stability
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has praised France’s decision to reopen its embassy in Damascus, describing it as a pivotal step toward renewed international engagement in Syria. The remarks came during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday, during which the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and pressing regional issues, including the future of Syria and the return of Syrian refugees.
“Reopening embassies will play a critical role in supporting stability and rebuilding Syria,” Erdogan said, according to a statement from Türkiye’s Communications Directorate. The discussion comes in the wake of the collapse of the Assad regime earlier this month, which has opened new possibilities for regional diplomacy and reconstruction efforts.
Erdogan emphasized the importance of international cooperation to ensure the safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. “Türkiye is fully committed to creating an environment where Syrian refugees can return with dignity,” he stated, urging global partners to contribute to reconstruction and revitalization efforts in Syria.
Both Erdogan and Macron underscored their commitment to preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty while fostering a peaceful transition in the post-Assad era. They agreed that reopening embassies and enhancing diplomatic engagement are crucial to addressing the challenges of reconstruction, refugee resettlement, and ensuring long-term stability in the region.
Erdogan highlighted Türkiye’s role as a regional leader, leveraging its extensive ties with Syria and experience hosting millions of Syrian refugees. “With the support of the international community, we can help Syrians return to their homes and rebuild their lives,” Erdogan said, reiterating Türkiye’s dedication to a sustainable resolution to the refugee crisis.
The leaders concluded their discussion by reaffirming the need for international unity in rebuilding Syria and preventing further instability, signaling a renewed focus on diplomatic and collaborative solutions in the war-torn country.
