Erdogan Calls on UN to Act Against Israel’s Attacks on Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed grave concerns regarding the United Nations’ inability to protect its personnel from Israeli attacks in Lebanon, calling for decisive action from the international body against Tel Aviv. His comments came after a cabinet meeting on Monday.
“The image of the UN, which cannot even protect its own personnel, is a source of shame and concern for the international system,” Erdogan stated, emphasizing the need for the UN Security Council to intervene. He questioned, “Indeed, we also wonder what the UN Security Council is waiting for to stop Israel.”
Erdogan criticized the UN Security Council for merely observing what he termed Israel’s acts of “banditry” against UN peacekeepers in Lebanon (UNIFIL), labeling this inaction as “impotence.” He stressed that Israel would continue its attacks as long as it receives unconditional support from the United States and Europe.
The Turkish president’s remarks came in light of recent incidents reported by the UN in Lebanon, where Israeli tanks breached a UN base on Sunday, marking yet another violation against peacekeeping forces in the region.
In addition to addressing the situation in Lebanon, President Erdogan congratulated Turkish-American economist Daron Acemoglu for winning the Nobel Prize in Economics, acknowledging the achievement as a point of national pride.
