Erdogan Criticizes Israel’s Actions, Reaffirms Support for Syria and Lebanon
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has strongly condemned Israel’s recent actions in Syria, describing them as an attempt to overshadow the Syrian revolution and suppress the Syrian people’s aspirations.
“Even if Israel is acting opportunistically, sooner or later it will have to withdraw from the lands it occupies,” Erdogan said during a televised address on Monday, referring to Israel’s latest incursions into Syrian territory.
Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s unwavering commitment to standing “on the right side of history” since the Syrian civil war began in 2011. “As Syria’s brother, we are the country that best interprets the new process. The Syrian revolution has drawn the world’s attention to this place,” he said.
Türkiye’s Stance on Syria
Erdogan emphasized Türkiye’s dedication to protecting Syria’s territorial integrity and unitary structure, affirming that Ankara would continue to support the Syrian people in preserving their achievements. “We will never back down from this,” he stated.
The president also addressed the threat posed by terrorist organizations in Syria, particularly the PKK/YPG and Daesh, warning that these groups have no place in the region’s future. “The PKK and its extensions will either eliminate themselves, or they will be eliminated,” Erdogan declared.
He assured that Türkiye’s counterterrorism operations in Syria would continue with “surgical precision,” ensuring no harm to civilians.
Ankara Declaration for the Horn of Africa
Erdogan also highlighted Türkiye’s role in facilitating a landmark agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia, signed on December 11, to address disputes over the Somaliland region and Ethiopia’s need for sea access.
“The Ankara Declaration is a historic step that we believe will contribute to lasting peace, tranquillity, and stability in the Horn of Africa, a region long plagued by tensions, hunger, and the divide-and-rule policies of imperialist powers,” Erdogan said.
Diplomatic Engagements
The Turkish president discussed recent diplomatic efforts, including a meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim, where the two leaders focused on Syria’s recovery after 13 years of conflict. “We will support Syria in its efforts to heal its wounds, rebuild its state, and recover its society,” Erdogan noted.
Erdogan also praised Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who recently visited Türkiye following Israeli strikes on Lebanon. “Mikati is carrying a heavy burden with great dignity during one of the most challenging periods in his country’s history,” Erdogan said, reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Lebanon.
A Vision for Regional Stability
Erdogan’s address underscored Türkiye’s active engagement in addressing regional crises, from countering aggression in Syria to facilitating peace in the Horn of Africa. Through diplomatic initiatives and steadfast support for its neighbors, Ankara continues to position itself as a key player in fostering stability across the region.
