Erdogan Signals Bold Move Towards Constitutional Reform in Türkiye

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for comprehensive constitutional reform, emphasizing that Türkiye must move beyond its “current constitution,” which was introduced following the 1980 military coup. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the new judicial year in Ankara on Monday, Erdogan stressed the necessity of drafting a new constitution under civilian governance, free from the influences of the past.

“We are sincere in our efforts to introduce a new constitution, and Türkiye is ready for it,” Erdogan declared. He reiterated the need to replace the existing constitution, which he described as a product of a coup-era junta, with a framework that will guide the nation into the future “without making any distinctions.”

Erdogan, a long-time advocate for constitutional reform, underscored his administration’s dedication to this cause, reaffirming his commitment to upholding the rule of law. “We have not and will not allow those who try to replace the principle of the rule of law with the law of the powerful,” he asserted.

The President also addressed the importance of fostering a more constructive political environment, warning against the dangers of hate and divisive politics. He urged politicians to recognize that such strategies “do not benefit our democracy or our nation,” calling for a shift towards a more collaborative and positive discourse.

In outlining the judicial priorities of his administration, Erdogan highlighted the need for a “predictable and solution-oriented justice system” that operates within “reasonable timeframes.” He noted that these elements will be a key focus in the ongoing efforts to strengthen Türkiye’s legal framework.

President Erdogan’s call for a new constitution reflects a broader ambition to modernize the country’s governance structure, moving away from the vestiges of its coup-era past and laying the foundation for a more democratic and inclusive future.
