Erdogan Welcomes Progress in Azerbaijan-Armenia Peace Process in Call with Aliyev

Erdogan

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday welcomed recent progress in the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process during a phone conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart, President Ilham Aliyev.

According to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan as well as regional developments.

President Erdogan described the advancements toward peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia as gratifying, noting that the establishment of lasting peace and a stable environment would contribute to stability across the wider region. He reaffirmed that Türkiye will continue to provide the necessary support to help achieve this goal.

The call came a day after President Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and US President Donald Trump signed a joint declaration at a trilateral summit at the White House. The agreement seeks to end decades of conflict between the South Caucasus neighbors through commitments to cease hostilities, reopen transport routes, and normalize diplomatic and economic relations.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been engaged in intermittent conflicts since the late 1980s, including the 2020 war in which Azerbaijan regained its territory of Karabakh.
