Indonesia Accelerates Waste-to-Energy Projects to Tackle Urban Waste and Boost Sustainable Power

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Prabowo Subianto has directed the ускорation of waste-to-energy (WTE) development across major Indonesian cities, aiming to address mounting waste challenges while strengthening the country’s alternative energy supply, officials said on Wednesday.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting at the president’s residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, attended by Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Perkasa Roeslani and other cabinet members.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the president was briefed on the progress of WTE initiatives, particularly in densely populated urban centers including Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Medan, and Denpasar.
According to Wijaya, the program is expected to offer a strategic solution to Indonesia’s long-standing waste management issues, which remain inadequately addressed in many regions. The initiative is also designed to support the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources.
He emphasized that President Prabowo has instructed the central government to take swift and integrated measures in tackling waste problems nationwide, with a strong focus on coordination between national agencies and local administrations.
The president underscored the need to transform accumulated urban waste into electricity, highlighting both environmental and economic benefits of the initiative.
“President Prabowo wants the government to immediately manage waste that has long been poorly handled, so it can be processed and turned into energy, especially electricity,” Wijaya stated.
The policy reflects the administration’s broader push to modernize waste management systems through technology-driven solutions while enhancing national energy security using domestic and sustainable resources.
