Indonesia Advocates for Special UN Rights for Palestine
New York, The Gulf Observer: During the Emergency Session of the United Nations General Assembly convened in New York, the United States, on Friday, Indonesia fervently urged the United Nations (UN) to grant special rights for Palestine, marking a pivotal moment in international diplomacy.
As one of the 77 countries co-sponsoring the resolution titled “Admission of New Members in the United Nations,” Indonesia’s initiative garnered support from 143 UN member countries, underscoring the global resonance of the Palestinian cause.
“This is the first time an observer state has been given special rights and authority similar to other UN members,” stated the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry in a statement released on Saturday.
Palestine, an observer state since 2012, is set to benefit from a range of privileges, including the ability to sit alongside UN member states, propose resolutions, and co-sponsor resolutions. Additionally, Palestine can aspire to chair UN General Assembly sessions and various committees, enabling full participation in UN and international conferences under the UN General Assembly Session.
The conferred privileges underscore the international community’s growing support for the Palestinian cause, further cementing Palestine’s recognition as a state within the UN framework and advancing the prospect of a two-state solution.
“With Palestine’s increasing role in becoming a full member of the UN, we hope the political visibility of Palestinian issues and struggles will increase. The new role is also expected to accommodate and accelerate Palestine’s application re-submission on its full membership to the UN Security Council,” remarked the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry in the official statement.
The Emergency Session of the UN General Assembly stemmed from the veto exercised by one of the UN Security Council’s permanent member states on Palestine’s application for full membership on April 18.
In response to a collective appeal from Arab countries, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement, the UN General Assembly has taken proactive steps toward advancing the Palestinian cause and international peace efforts.
“This success is also supported by Indonesia’s active role in gathering support from countries in several regions,” emphasized the statement, highlighting Indonesia’s proactive diplomatic efforts in advancing the Palestinian agenda on the global stage.
