Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Foreign Minister Sugiono praised the significant progress made in border negotiations between Indonesia and Malaysia during a meeting with the Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin, held in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The meeting highlighted positive developments in negotiations concerning maritime and land borders between the two neighboring countries. Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to continue discussions on unresolved border issues, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and diplomacy in achieving a mutually beneficial agreement.

Apart from border negotiations, the leaders also discussed bilateral economic cooperation, ASEAN affairs, and the Palestinian issue. Minister Sugiono expressed his optimism about the economic partnership, citing successful collaborations between PT Pertamina and PETRONAS, as well as cooperation in the palm oil sector. He stressed that these partnerships exemplify the long-standing economic ties between the two nations.

Sugiono also reaffirmed Indonesia’s support for Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship this year, underscoring joint efforts to bolster regional cooperation and stability.

Regarding the Palestinian issue, both sides emphasized their commitment to a two-state solution and the need for a permanent ceasefire to achieve lasting peace.

According to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia remains the fourth-largest investor in Indonesia within the Southeast Asian region, with investments valued at USD 4.1 billion in 2024. The two countries have enjoyed 68 years of diplomatic relations, with Malaysia being Indonesia’s closest neighbor and strategic partner.

The Indonesian Ministry of Trade reported a bilateral trade value of USD 21.1 billion from January to November 2024, with Indonesia recording a surplus of USD 800 thousand. Exports from Indonesia to Malaysia stood at USD 10.9 billion, while imports from Malaysia amounted to USD 10.1 billion.

The meeting between Minister Sugiono and Ambassador Hussin reaffirmed the close and enduring partnership between Indonesia and Malaysia, reflecting the shared commitment to fostering bilateral cooperation and regional stability.
