Indonesia Announces Candidacy for Non-Permanent Seat on UN Security Council for 2029-2030

New York, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has announced Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029-2030 term. Speaking before the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Minister Retno underscored Indonesia’s deep commitment to promoting global peace and security through its candidature.

“This candidature reflects our deep commitment to contributing towards global peace and security,” Retno stated, emphasizing that Indonesia’s foreign policy is anchored in principles of peace, justice, and humanity.

Indonesia has previously served four terms as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, including the most recent term in 2019-2020, and earlier in 1974-1975, 1995-1996, and 2007-2008. Minister Retno highlighted Indonesia’s consistent leadership and dedication to multilateral diplomacy during these terms.

Retno stressed that Indonesia believes global leadership must be earned through collective effort. “Rest assured that Indonesia’s commitment towards common peace, common prosperity, and common security will be carried forward across Indonesia’s successive administrations,” she affirmed.

The foreign minister also took the opportunity to express Indonesia’s criticism of the current structure and leadership of the UNSC, citing unresolved global conflicts, such as the long-standing Palestinian issue, as a major concern. Retno reiterated the importance of reforming the Security Council to ensure more effective leadership for peace.

“Reforming the Security Council is very necessary to ensure leadership for peace,” she noted, outlining two essential steps for reform: a more democratic decision-making process and greater inclusion of diverse global voices, beyond the influence of a few powerful nations.

Indonesia’s candidacy for the 2029-2030 term aims to champion these reforms while continuing to advocate for peace, stability, and justice on the global stage.
