Indonesia Calls for Fairer Global Tax System at G20 Finance Ministers’ Meeting in South Africa

South Africa

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has underscored the pressing need for a more equitable, effective, and stable international taxation system during the recent G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting held in Durban, South Africa.

In a public statement shared via social media on Friday, the Minister emphasized that international taxation should not be viewed merely as a fiscal tool but as a matter of global justice—one that ensures equal opportunities for all countries, especially developing nations, to participate in and benefit from cross-border economic activities.

“Tax is not just about national revenues. It is about shaping a more equal and sustainable future for the world,” Minister Indrawati stated.

She reaffirmed Indonesia’s support for the Two-Pillar Solution, an initiative under the OECD/G20 framework aimed at addressing the tax challenges arising from digitalization and ensuring fair allocation of taxing rights. “Indonesia has already begun implementing the solution, but our collective work is far from finished,” she said.

Minister Indrawati also stressed the importance of ensuring no country is left behind in navigating the increasingly complex global tax environment, calling on G20 members to foster an inclusive approach that empowers all economies, regardless of size or income level.

She noted the critical roles of international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and United Nations (UN) in supporting developing nations to build capacity and maintain fiscal sovereignty.

In addition to taxation, the Indonesian Finance Minister reiterated the country’s commitment to open, inclusive, and mutually beneficial dialogue in areas such as trade and investment. She emphasized that such cooperation is vital for creating jobs, fostering innovation, boosting productivity, and ensuring shared prosperity.

Minister Sri Mulyani attended the meeting alongside Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo, as part of Indonesia’s continued engagement in the G20 platform to help shape policies for global economic resilience and equity.
