Indonesia, Malaysia Leaders Meet in Jakarta to Strengthen Ties, Mark Eid Celebrations

Indonesia

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Merdeka Palace on Friday, as both leaders sought to deepen bilateral relations while celebrating the spirit of Eid al-Fitr.

According to Indonesia’s Presidential Secretariat, Prime Minister Anwar arrived at the palace at 4:25 p.m. local time, escorted by a ceremonial motorcade of 17 motorist troops. President Prabowo personally welcomed him upon arrival, underscoring the warmth of ties between the two neighboring nations.

The diplomatic reception featured a cultural highlight as both leaders enjoyed the traditional Maluku folk song “Rasa Sayange,” performed by the music corps. Prime Minister Anwar was seen briefly joining in, reflecting the cordial and friendly atmosphere of the occasion.

The two leaders then proceeded inside the palace, walking side by side while engaging in informal discussions before holding formal talks. Their meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and reaffirming the close personal rapport that underpins Indonesia-Malaysia relations.

The Indonesian government expressed optimism that the leaders’ strong bond would help maintain harmonious relations and foster mutual support in addressing regional and global challenges.

Prime Minister Anwar, who arrived earlier in Jakarta, was received at the airport by Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono. In a statement, he emphasized that his visit aimed to enhance bilateral ties and exchange views on key geopolitical developments, particularly the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

He noted that, at President Prabowo’s invitation, the meeting would also address the broader implications of the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, including its impact on regional stability and the global economy.

The Jakarta engagement follows a telephone conversation between the two leaders earlier in the week, during which they discussed the evolving regional security situation and reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue and cooperation.
