Indonesia Poised to Become a Global Hub for Electric Motorcycles

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (Aismoli) has asserted that Indonesia holds the potential to emerge as a key player in the global electric motorcycle industry, attributing this to the country’s substantial market size.

During a discussion held in Jakarta, Aismoli Secretary Abdullah Alwi expressed optimism, stating that by 2030, Indonesia is expected to be the third-largest market for electric motorcycles globally, following China and India. He emphasized that Indonesia’s position is not just about market share but represents a significant opportunity for establishing an industrial base.

Alwi highlighted the increasing presence of companies venturing into electric motor development within the country, envisioning Indonesia as not only an industrial base but also a future exporter of electric motors.

He revealed that the current population of electric motorcycles in Indonesia has reached 74,988 per month, a notable surge from a few hundred units in 2020.

Ahmad Heri Firdaus, a researcher and economist at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), emphasized that Indonesia’s high usage of two-wheeled vehicles, with one motorcycle for every four residents in the country, presents a substantial opportunity for transitioning to electric motorcycles.

However, Firdaus acknowledged that Indonesia faces challenges in achieving its goal of zero emissions by 2060, particularly in the conversion of gasoline motorcycles to electric versions. Building public confidence in electric vehicles remains a significant hurdle.

Despite the notable increase in the adoption of electric motorbikes, the country is yet to meet the government’s target of selling 13.5 million electric motorcycles by 2030.

Firdaus recommended that both the government and electric motorcycle manufacturers intensify efforts to educate the Indonesian population about electric motorcycles. Building understanding and trust is crucial, addressing concerns related to power, durability, after-sales service, and other technical aspects.

The assertion from Aismoli and insights from experts reflect a positive trajectory for Indonesia’s role in the global electric motorcycle industry, signaling opportunities for market growth and industrial development.
