Indonesia Secures Diplomatic Triumph by Hosting 10th World Water Forum

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s hosting of the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) is hailed as a diplomatic victory, marking a significant achievement on the international stage for water management. Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono emphasized this point following his attendance at the Segara Kerthi (water purification) ritual on Saturday.

“(The 10th World Water Forum) is Indonesia’s diplomatic victory on the international stage for water management,” Minister Hadimuljono declared. He noted that this year’s forum will differ from previous editions, beginning with a summit immediately after the opening ceremony. “We will organize a summit. There will be 11 heads of state participating in the summit. After the opening ceremony, the President will preside over the summit,” he informed.

During the summit, President Joko Widodo will engage with leaders on their perspectives regarding water resources management. A key outcome of the forum will be a ministerial-level declaration, developed with UNESCO’s assistance, reflecting the concerted efforts of Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry. This declaration will also include a compendium of concrete deliverables in its appendix.

Indonesia aims to achieve consensus on three main points during the forum: the establishment of the Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience (COE), the streamlining of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), and the declaration of World Lakes Day. “We will also see some MoUs (memorandums of understanding) signed, including on grants or new projects,” the minister added.

Themed “Water for Shared Prosperity,” the 10th World Water Forum will cover four key aspects: water conservation, clean water and sanitation, food and energy security, and natural disaster mitigation. The international forum is set to open on Monday, May 20, 2024, and promises to deliver substantive discussions and actionable outcomes for global water management.
