Indonesia targets to develop its own EVs by 2025-2026

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Coordinating Minister of Indonesia for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, has set a goal for the country to have its own electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025 or 2026, designed and manufactured by Indonesian talent.
“In 2025 or 2026, Indonesia should be able to have its own electric vehicles made by our own people,” said Luhut during a seminar in Jakarta on Thursday.
Luhut mentioned that Indonesia is currently attracting interest from various EV players, representing around half of global production volume.
One international EV manufacturer showing interest in EV development in Indonesia is Geely, a major Chinese EV producer.
“We’ve been in talks with Geely for several months now, and recently, we offered to conduct joint research to create EVs in Indonesia,” Luhut explained.
Geely responded positively to the proposal to collaborate on EV research in Indonesia.
Luhut has also reported this development to President Joko Widodo, who welcomed and approved the idea.
“We are currently discussing the technical aspects, and the President is also on board,” he added.
According to Luhut, this is the best moment for Indonesia to have and produce EVs as a testament to Indonesian ingenuity.
Globally, the transition from conventional vehicles to EVs is accelerating, with EV sales surpassing the critical threshold. Global EV sales can grow rapidly once they reach 5-10 percent market share.
The adoption of EVs is speeding up due to the multiplier effect from individuals or groups embracing new innovations, products, or technologies before the broader population, often referred to as early adopters.
The manufacturing sector also reaches a critical point once EV sales account for 10 percent of total sales, leading to a potential tripling of EV sales.
“When else would we have Indonesian-made EVs? So, let’s conduct joint research and make a big leap forward,” Luhut stated.
