Indonesia to Draft Regulation on Artificial Intelligence Usage by April

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has announced plans to prepare a regulation governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the next three months, marking a significant step toward ensuring the responsible application of this technology.

Minister Meutya Hafid confirmed on Monday that she has entrusted Deputy Minister Nezar Patria with the task of drafting the regulation. Hafid emphasized that the government had already issued a circular containing guidelines for AI use, which focus on key principles such as transparency, accountability, human rights, copyright protection, and safety.

“We are indeed planning to elevate these guidelines to the level of a regulation. This matter is currently under discussion by Deputy Minister Nezar,” Hafid stated.

Patria had previously highlighted the importance of crafting a comprehensive regulation to ensure AI is utilized responsibly across various sectors. “We will develop principles for AI development and application, which can be adopted by sectors including education, health, infrastructure, and financial services,” he said in a statement on December 17.

Discussions regarding the AI regulation are set to begin in mid-January, accompanied by workshops and consultations to engage stakeholders across various industries. The move reflects Indonesia’s commitment to leveraging AI technology while ensuring it is deployed ethically and safely.
