Indonesian and Egyptian Navies Strengthen Maritime Cooperation
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) and the Egyptian Navy have strengthened their cooperation to enhance their capabilities in safeguarding the maritime sovereignty of both nations. This collaboration was underscored by a high-level meeting between the Indonesian defense attaché in Cairo, Colonel Dafris D. Syahruddin, and the commander of the Egyptian Navy, Vice Admiral Ashraf Ibrahim Atwa Megahed, at the Egyptian Navy headquarters in Alexandria on Wednesday.
First Admiral I Made Wira Hady, Head of the Indonesian Navy Information Office, confirmed the courtesy visit in a statement on Friday. He highlighted the strong historical ties between Indonesia and Egypt, noting that these relations were reinforced by the visit of the Indonesian President to Egypt in December 2024 and regular visits by Indonesian naval ships to Port Said and Alexandria.
“The solid relationship between Indonesia and Egypt has led to numerous military collaborations, including state visits and joint exercises,” Hady stated.
During the meeting, Syahruddin and Megahed discussed several key areas of military cooperation, including efforts to enhance navy-to-navy relations through joint exercises, training programs, and collaboration in the defense industry. Additionally, the Egyptian military extended an invitation to the Indonesian Navy to send two newly acquired vessels from Italy, KRI Brawijaya-320 and KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, to Alexandria.
Hady expressed optimism that this meeting would further strengthen the partnership between Indonesia and Egypt, fostering deeper cooperation in defense and security matters.
Earlier in December 2024, following his meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to enhancing its relationship with Egypt. He emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties in various sectors, including economy, trade, industry, technology, education, tourism, and defense.
The ongoing cooperation between the Indonesian and Egyptian navies signifies the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, reinforcing their mutual commitment to regional stability and maritime security.
