Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo to Address at Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore

Singapore, The Gulf Observer: Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto is set to speak at a special session of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, June 1. Brigadier General Edwin Adrian Sumantha, Head of the Defense Ministry’s Public Relations Bureau, confirmed the minister’s participation on Friday, highlighting Indonesia’s active role in promoting global peace and stability.

“Minister Prabowo is scheduled to deliver a special speech in the forum on Saturday afternoon, June 1, 2024. The session will be moderated by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Executive Chairman Sir John Chipman,” Sumantha stated.

The Shangri-La Dialogue serves as a critical platform for defense leaders and stakeholders to engage in discussions on global strategic security issues. Established in 2002 by the IISS, the forum annually gathers state leaders, government officials, analysts, experts, think-tanks, and academicians in Singapore to address strategic, geopolitical, defense, and security concerns.

The 21st Shangri-La Dialogue, taking place from May 31 to June 2, 2024, features participation from several high-profile defense ministers, including United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Chinese Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun. Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. is slated to deliver his speech on the first day, while Singapore’s Minister of Defense Ng Eng Hen will close the event with a speech on “Re-Imagining Solutions for Regional Stability.”

At the previous Shangri-La Dialogue in 2023, Minister Prabowo was a prominent panelist, where he presented several proposals to mitigate the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. His suggestions included a ceasefire, the establishment of a demilitarized zone, the deployment of UN peacekeepers, and advocating for a referendum to address the conflict.

Prabowo’s upcoming address at the Shangri-La Dialogue underscores Indonesia’s ongoing commitment to contributing to international peace and security dialogues, reflecting its proactive stance in global strategic affairs.
