Indonesian Films to Shine on Global Stage: Ministry Plans International Festival Participation

Bali, The Gulf Observer: The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry of Indonesia is set to showcase Indonesian films on the international stage, with plans to participate in various film festivals worldwide throughout this year. The initiative aims to promote Indonesia’s rich cinematic culture and boost the global recognition of its film industry.

Director of Film, Music, and Media at the ministry, Ahmad Mahendra, announced the forthcoming participation at the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART), scheduled for March 10-14. This marks the initiation of Indonesia’s involvement in international film festivals this year, continuing a promotional program that started in 2023.

Hong Kong will become the 19th overseas location for Indonesia’s film and culture promotional program, with plans for the establishment of the Indonesia Pavilion at FILMART. The program will include networking events, panel discussions, and market screenings, all falling under the theme of “Discover Indonesia.” Fifteen production houses and two Indonesian film festival organizers are set to participate in these activities.

Mahendra stated that the delegation’s primary objective is to introduce Indonesian films at FILMART, supporting the growth of the domestic creative industry. Beyond Hong Kong, Indonesia is slated to participate in other prestigious film festivals, including the Udine Far East Film Festival in Italy, Cannes Film Festival in France, and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea.

A total of 50 Indonesian films are expected to be featured across these international festivals, demonstrating the country’s commitment to establishing a strong presence in the global film scene. Mahendra emphasized that the ministry’s active engagement in various international festivals reflects its dedication to advancing the position of Indonesian films on the world stage.

Vivian Idris, Deputy for Festival and Event Organizing at the Indonesian Film Agency (BPI), expressed gratitude for the ministry’s continuous support, believing that Indonesia’s participation in diverse festivals will contribute to elevating the country’s filmmakers on the global platform. The move is seen as a significant step towards bringing progress to the Indonesian film industry and fostering international recognition.
