Indonesia's Mount Marapi Erupts

Agam, The Gulf Observer: Mount Marapi in West Sumatra Province experienced three eruptions and emitted booming sounds on Saturday evening, as confirmed by the village chief of Bukit Batubuah in Agam District.

Around 8:45 p.m., three loud explosions were accompanied by reddish light emanating from the crater, followed by flaming sparks and sustained roaring sounds lasting approximately 10 minutes. Some villagers reported earthquake-like tremors during the eruption.

Firdaus, the village chief, expressed concern about potential recurrence and pledged to maintain vigilance, particularly for residents near the volcano. Local volcano observation officer Teguh Purnomo highlighted that Mount Marapi has erupted over 100 times since early December, with 113 recorded eruptions, including six in 2024.

He urged people to remain calm, emphasizing the volcano’s alert status and advising against outdoor activities within a three-kilometer radius of the crater.

Mount Marapi, situated in Agam and Tanah Datar districts, has been active since December, resulting in 24 casualties.
