Indonesia’s Parliament Highlights Governance at Asian Parliamentary Assembly
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) underscored the critical role of parliaments as the cornerstone of effective governance during the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) meeting held in Baghdad, Iraq.
“Parliament is fundamentally an institution that underpins good governance,” BKSAP Chair Mardani Ali Sera stated on Sunday, according to a press release issued on Monday.
Ali Sera emphasized that in democratic nations, national policies can genuinely reflect the public’s interest only if parliament plays an active role in their formulation. He advocated for strengthening parliamentary functions through collaboration with various stakeholders, including international institutions such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Such partnerships, he noted, are crucial for sharing insights, learning from best practices, and benchmarking governance models successfully implemented in other countries.
To ensure effective governance, Ali Sera highlighted the importance of adopting good parliamentary practices, including greater openness and enhanced public access to information about legislative processes.
“Parliamentary participation is integral to the philosophy of open government, which aims to establish a transparent and accountable administration in line with democratic principles,” he remarked.
Discussions on good governance and effective parliamentary practices formed one of the eight thematic focuses of the draft resolution deliberated at the APA Standing Committee on Political Affairs meeting in Baghdad.
The meeting brought together representatives from parliaments of APA member countries, including Türkiye, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Russia, to exchange ideas and promote mutual understanding on governance issues.
