Indonesia’s Parliament Leads by Example with Plastic-Free Policy at PUIC Conference

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to environmental sustainability by implementing a plastic-free policy during the 19th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference, held at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta from May 12 to 15.
DPR Secretary General Indra Iskandar, speaking on Monday, emphasized that the initiative was more than symbolic. “This policy represents a firm stance by the Indonesian parliament to champion environmental issues,” he said, adding that the DPR Speaker had underscored Indonesia’s intention to lead by example in demonstrating commitment to sustainability at the global stage.
In alignment with the initiative, no plastic cups or bottles were used throughout the event. Instead, all delegates were provided with refillable tumblers, a move welcomed and positively received by participants. “We gave all delegates tumblers, and they could refill water if they wanted to drink. This is a commitment that we showed,” Iskandar explained.
The plastic-free approach reflects Indonesia’s efforts to ensure that environmental consciousness becomes an integral part of international diplomacy, especially in light of the conference’s theme: “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.” Iskandar noted that the policy sends a message that good governance includes sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
Delegates from member and observer countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) responded favorably to the initiative, praising Indonesia’s leadership in reducing plastic waste and fostering a greener approach to hosting high-level international events.
Iskandar further stated that this step is intended to inspire other parliaments and institutions to adopt similar policies, thus creating a ripple effect in embedding sustainability into global parliamentary practices.
Earlier, DPR Speaker Puan Maharani remarked that hosting the PUIC Conference presents a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to reaffirm its role as a proactive and solution-oriented diplomatic force in the Muslim world—one that upholds democratic, inclusive, and environmentally conscious values.
The PUIC Conference in Jakarta is expected to draw participation from around 500 delegates representing OIC member states and observer countries, making it a significant platform for both inter-parliamentary dialogue and the promotion of sustainable practices.
