Iran and Qatar Call for Stronger Regional Cooperation on Climate Action at COP29
Tehran, The Gulf Observer: Iranian Vice President and Head of the Department of Environment, Shina Ansari, called for decisive climate action at COP29, urging regional governments to collaborate in mitigating the impacts of climate change. Her remarks came during a meeting with Qatar’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change on Tuesday, as both leaders discussed the urgent need for tangible progress at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, currently underway in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The COP29 summit, being held from November 11 to 22, has brought together representatives from across the globe to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change.
In her meeting with the Qatari minister, Ansari emphasized that both Iran and Qatar are facing significant environmental threats, including the devastating effects of climate change and recurring dust storms. “Dust storms have plagued multiple Iranian provinces, creating severe environmental and health challenges. Tackling this issue requires robust cooperation and commitment from regional countries,” Ansari stated.
Ansari also highlighted the importance of revitalizing the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), which focuses on environmental conservation in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. She expressed hope that strengthened Iran-Qatar cooperation could set an example for neighboring countries, encouraging them to prioritize initiatives aimed at mitigating dust storms and improving regional environmental resilience.
The COP29 summit is set to continue its negotiations throughout the week, with countries expected to formalize commitments that will address global environmental concerns and strengthen regional climate resilience.
