Iran Warns Europe Against “Snapback Mechanism,” Emphasizes Legal and Moral Limits

Iran

Tehran, The Gulf Observer: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has cautioned Europe over the potential consequences of activating the so-called “snapback mechanism,” asserting that the European troika—Britain, France, and Germany—along with the European Union, lack both the legal and moral authority to invoke it.

Araghchi conveyed his warning during a Friday phone call with the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, as well as his counterparts from the three European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

During the discussion, Araghchi outlined Iran’s stance on the snapback mechanism and clarified the responsibilities of the three European countries and the EU in this context. He emphasized that while Iran has taken decisive steps to protect its interests, it remains committed to diplomacy and is open to solutions that safeguard the rights of the Iranian people.

Responding to Europe’s repeated suggestions to extend UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to allow more time for negotiations, Araghchi stated that the Council must decide on the matter. He added that Iran maintains a principled position but will not directly engage in the process, though it will consult with its allies in the Security Council regarding the potential consequences.

The European officials reiterated their readiness to pursue a diplomatic solution, and it was agreed that discussions between Iran and the European countries, along with the EU, will continue at the level of deputy foreign ministers next Tuesday.
