Tehran, The Gulf Observer: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday extended congratulations to the nation’s medical community on the occasion of National Doctors’ Day, which commemorates the birth anniversary of renowned Persian philosopher and physician Bu Ali Sina, known in the West as Avicenna.

In a statement, Araghchi praised the dedication and sacrifices of doctors and medical staff, noting that they have remained committed to their oath of service despite enduring hardships, including the impact of inhumane sanctions.

“Doctors and medical staff are always ready to remain faithful to their pledge and protect the people with unceasing sacrifice, whether on the battlefields or in difficult days of crisis and disease,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of the day, observed annually on August 23 (the first day of Shahrivar in the Persian calendar), Araghchi said it is not only a moment to honor the legacy of Avicenna — the great sage, physician, and scientist — but also a reminder of the “sacred mission of doctors who are not only healers of the body, but also balms for the soul and spirit of society.”

He paid tribute to medical professionals who lost their lives during times of war and health crises, stating, “From Khorramshahr and Ahvaz to the difficult days of the Coronavirus pandemic and the recent 12-day Israeli-imposed war, they have always remained faithful to their promise and been the refuge of the people.”

Araghchi further emphasized that the memory of fallen medics will remain an enduring source of guidance and inspiration. “Undoubtedly, the memory of the martyred medics will be our guiding light and inspiration on the path of service and resistance,” he said, adding that Iranian doctors have consistently shown that “their hands are a mirror of divine mercy.”

Bu Ali Sina, born on August 23 around 980 AD in Afshana, Transoxiana, is regarded as one of the most influential scholars of the Islamic Golden Age. A distinguished physician, philosopher, and astronomer, his contributions to science and medicine are commemorated in Iran each year through National Doctors’ Day.
