Iranian Parliament Approves Bill to Suspend Cooperation with IAEA

Tehran, The Gulf Observer: The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Parliament has approved a bill mandating the government to suspend all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing violations of Iran’s sovereignty and international law by the United States and the Israeli regime.

According to the bill, the suspension applies to Iran’s commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and its associated safeguards. The legislation was introduced following recent aerial attacks by the United States on Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, which Tehran has condemned as a breach of the United Nations Charter and international legal norms.

The bill underscores that the attacks by the Israeli regime on June 13 and subsequent U.S. strikes targeting peaceful nuclear sites constitute a direct threat to Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Citing Article 60 of the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, the legislation empowers the administration to suspend cooperation with the IAEA until specific conditions are met.

The stipulated conditions include:

  1. Full respect for Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the protection of its nuclear facilities and nuclear scientists, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter, as determined by the Supreme National Security Council.
  2. Recognition of Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear development, including uranium enrichment within its territory, as guaranteed under Article IV of the NPT and affirmed by the Supreme National Security Council.

In response to the attacks, Iranian authorities have stated that the country reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interests, and people. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) also condemned the military aggression, declaring that the strikes will not deter the nation’s pursuit of a peaceful nuclear program and emphasizing that such actions represent a clear violation of the NPT.

The government is expected to begin implementation of the bill immediately, pending oversight by national security institutions.
