Iranian Parliament Confirms Abbas Araghchi as New Foreign Minister
Tehran, The Gulf Observer: The Iranian parliament has officially approved Seyyed Abbas Araghchi as Iran’s new Foreign Minister, solidifying a key appointment in President Masoud Pezeshkian’s cabinet. Araghchi secured an overwhelming majority, winning 247 out of 288 ballots cast during Wednesday’s vote of confidence.
Araghchi brings extensive experience to the role, having served as the Secretary of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations since 2021. His diplomatic career is marked by significant contributions, including his tenure as Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs from 2017 to 2021 under the leadership of former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
A seasoned diplomat, Araghchi was a central figure in the negotiation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran’s landmark nuclear deal with world powers, which was finalized in 2015. His involvement in these high-stakes negotiations has earned him a reputation as a skilled and strategic diplomat.
In his new role, Araghchi is expected to focus on fulfilling President Pezeshkian’s commitments to reviving the nuclear deal and mending Iran’s relations with the Western world. His appointment is seen as a clear signal of the administration’s intent to pursue diplomatic engagement and rebuild trust with international partners.
The parliamentary approval of Araghchi’s appointment is a significant step in the formation of President Pezeshkian’s government, setting the stage for Iran’s foreign policy direction in the coming years.
