Iran’s Ali Bagheri Kani Meets with UNGA President in New York
New York, The Gulf Observer: Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, met with the President of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, at the United Nations headquarters on Monday evening. The meeting occurred during Bagheri Kani’s visit to New York to attend UN Security Council (UNSC) meetings.
During their discussion, Bagheri Kani and Francis exchanged views on various international issues. The Iranian diplomat emphasized the urgent need for more effective efforts to halt what he described as Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza.
Upon his arrival in New York, Bagheri Kani was welcomed by Iran’s Permanent Ambassador and Representative to the UN, Amir Saied Iravani. Bagheri Kani is leading a delegation to participate in a UNSC meeting focused on Palestine and multilateralism. The meetings are being chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as Russia holds the rotating presidency of the 15-member Security Council.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival, Bagheri Kani highlighted the significance of the issues on the UNSC agenda, noting their importance to international relations and to Iran. He underscored the severe and systematic violence in Gaza over the past nine months, labeling it as a clear crime and genocide. Bagheri Kani reiterated Iran’s longstanding active role in advocating for Palestinian rights through political, legal, and diplomatic channels.
Bagheri Kani also paid tribute to the late Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, noting his active participation in previous General Assembly and Security Council meetings where he worked to bring attention to the realities in Palestine and Gaza.
“Iran is committed to utilizing the UN Security Council’s capacity to defend the rights and positions of the Palestinian nation and to expose the crimes of the Zionist regime,” Bagheri Kani stated.
The UNSC meetings are expected to address critical issues regarding Palestine and the broader implications for international diplomacy and multilateral efforts.
